Washington Capitals Draft Four Prospects in 2026 NHL Draft

The Washington Capitals selected four players in the 2026 NHL Draft, headlined by Finnish center Oliver Suvanto with the 18th overall pick.

What happened in the draft?

The Capitals added three more prospects on Saturday, selecting Tyus Sparks, Brian McFadden, and Logan Stuart.

Suvanto, 17, entered the draft as one of the top international prospects, ranked as the No. 1 international center and No. 3 international skater by NHL Central Scouting.

Why it matters for Washington Capitals

The selection of Suvanto was historic for Washington, as he became just the second Finnish player the Capitals have ever drafted in the first round.

The Capitals currently stand 9th in the Eastern Conference with a 43-30 record, on a W4 streak.

Sparks, an 18-year-old center, enjoyed a breakout season in the WHL, recording 65 points in 69 games.

What comes next for the Capitals?

Washington then added size on the blue line with McFadden, a 6-foot-5 defenseman from Thayer Academy in Massachusetts.

The Capitals wrapped up their draft by selecting Stuart, a center from USA Hockey's National Team Development Program.

Three of Washington's four selections were centers, underscoring the organization's emphasis on strengthening its depth at the position.

The Capitals are looking to build on their current momentum, with Alex Ovechkin leading the team.
