Washington Capitals make bold moves, eye Cup run after 2026 playoff miss

The Washington Capitals are back as serious Eastern Conference contenders after a stunning offseason overhaul.

What happened to the Washington Capitals?

After winning the Metropolitan Division in 2024-25, the Washington Capitals missed the 2026 playoffs by three points. General Manager Chris Patrick reacted aggressively, pulling off one of the NHL’s busiest offseasons. The Caps added proven scorers, shutdown defenders and re-signed Alex Ovechkin for a 21st NHL season. They now stand 9th in the Eastern Conference with a 43-30 record and on a four-game win streak.

Who did Washington Capitals add this offseason?

Washington landed St. Louis Blues forward Jordan Kyrou in a blockbuster trade. Kyrou has three 30-goal seasons and will play with more talent than ever in D.C. The Caps also signed Buffalo Sabres forward Alex Tuch via sign-and-trade. Tuch can score, defend and lead, making him a Swiss Army Knife. Veteran Boone Jenner joined on a four-year deal for faceoffs and penalty kill work. On defense, Washington added Vincent Desharnais, a big stay-at-home rearguard who will anchor the penalty kill.

Why Ovechkin’s one-year deal matters for Washington

Alex Ovechkin returned on a one-year pact at age 40 after a 32-goal season. Keeping Ovi maintains the Caps’ identity and gives the locker room a chance to chase another Stanley Cup. His presence could push young stars and energize a team that fell just short in 2026. Ovechkin’s shot and leadership remain game-changers even at 40.

Can Washington’s young core take the next step?

Washington still leans on veterans like Dylan Strome, Tom Wilson and Jacob Chychrun. But young forwards Ryan Leonard and Cole Hutson are ready to break out. Leonard piled up 45 points in 75 games as a rookie. Hutson, a defenseman, logged 10 points in 14 games after his call-up. With Kyrou and Tuch setting up linemates, Aliaksei Protas could push past 52 points from last season.

Can Logan Thompson carry Washington to the promised land?

The only real question is goaltending. Logan Thompson has answered so far. Since arriving in 2024, he finished fourth in Vezina voting twice. Last season Thompson ranked top five in wins, goals-against average and save percentage. Scott Wedgewood was the only other goalie to finish in all three categories. If Thompson repeats that level, Washington’s Cup window stays wide open.
