The Washington Capitals have swung a minor trade with the Buffalo Sabres, sending forward Zac Funk to Buffalo in exchange for forward Tyler Kopff. The move comes as the Capitals sit ninth in the Eastern Conference with a 43-30 record and riding a four-game winning streak.
The deal centers on two players moving between the Capitals’ Hershey Bears (AHL) and the Sabres’ Rochester Americans (AHL). Buffalo acquired Funk, 22, while Washington landed Kopff. Funk spent last season split between the ECHL’s South Carolina Stingrays and the AHL’s Hershey Bears. In 23 games with the Stingrays, he posted nine goals, 10 assists, and 19 points with a plus-2 rating. In the AHL, he logged two assists and eight penalty minutes in 13 appearances.
Kopff, 24, played mostly for Rochester in the AHL last season. In 30 games with the Americans, he managed one goal and five points. He also logged two goals and six points in 10 games for the Jacksonville Icemen of the ECHL.
For the Capitals, the move clears roster flexibility while sending Funk—a high-scoring junior standout—to a new organization. Funk dominated in the WHL with the Prince George Cougars in 2023-24, posting 67 goals, 56 assists, and 123 points in 68 games. His transition to the AHL has been uneven, though, and the Capitals likely see Kopff as a depth option who can contribute at the AHL level.
The Capitals’ 43-30 record keeps them in playoff contention in the Eastern Conference. They’ve won four straight games heading into the summer, a stretch that could shape their late-season roster decisions. Swapping Funk for Kopff keeps Washington’s AHL pipeline active without altering the NHL roster.
The Capitals will monitor Funk’s progress in Buffalo’s system after his WHL scoring explosion. Kopff returns to Washington’s AHL affiliate, where he’ll compete for minutes in Hershey. The trade reflects a common organizational pattern: moving prospects through the minors to test development before pushing for NHL roles.
Washington’s front office continues to balance roster needs with prospect evaluation. With the Capitals chasing playoff positioning, minor transactions like this one help manage depth without major roster upheaval.
